Experiment

Multidish lnb

March 26, 2006

As you may have seen on other experiment, I want to go to 16 lnbfs on 1 receiver.  Doing that gave me another thing to test.  I knew about the toroidal dishes where you can install many lnbs, but can you use a big dish (1.2 meter), make some kind of a holder to hold many lnbs.

Here are some pictures of the work in progress.  Click on the picture to get a bigger one.

I tried at first using a stell round bar but it was too heavy.  I replaced it with a straight bar and used some lnbs holders to place the lnbs to a good place.

This is the test I did before.

Using a 75 cm starchoice dish, I placed 4 lnbs at 110,119,121 and 129 it worked great.

The question after that was. How can I make the lnb holders, should it be straight or curved. And if it is curved is it inside the dish or outside.

After much reading, asking questions and looking at pictures I found that it had to be curved and follow the curve of the dish.

To do that I used a styrofoam model that I cut (what a mess).

Then I turned back the styrofoam to shape the lnb holder with an aluminium bar.

I placed my model outside on my post to verify the optimal angle to place the lnbs.

An interim tryout

I made a steel bar to hold the lnb. It will be tougher than aluminium. I placed the lnbs on it. However it was too heavy so I had to replace it.

The Final result

I used a smaller bar to hold the lnb and brackets to place them at the optimal position.
